If you're not familiar, every year during Computer Science Education Week, students in over 180 countries participate in Hour of Code. HOC started as a one-hour introduction to computer science designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.
Now, the campaign is supported by over 200,000 educators worldwide, and 60,000+ events are registered for 2019.
Why computer science?
Here's why learning to code is so important according to Code.org:
- Computing makes up ⅔ of projected new jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
- Computer occupations are among the highest-paying jobs for new graduates.
- Most elementary and middle schools lack computer science curriculum, and only 45% of US high schools teach CS.
